How we work to protect the county's archaeological resource and maintain the Historic Environment Record, and what to do if you think you've found an archaeological site or object.
News flash: County Archaeology is moving
After more than 18 years based at Central Library, Oxford, County Archaeological Services will be moving on 12 December 2009 to Speedwell House, Speedwell Street, Oxford. The HER will offer public visits until Friday 27 November; after that all enquiries must be done by phone (01865 810825) or email.
However, as much of the team’s time from 30th November until the Christmas break will be committed to the move and the subsequent setting up at Speedwell House, we cannot guarantee our normal rapid response to enquiries. For non-planning enquiries researchers are recommended initially to use the online Heritage Search system. But please be aware that this is an abbreviated record that is not regularly updated by our service. Therefore it should not be used as a stand-alone database for planning purposes.
The HER will open again to the public on Tuesday 5 January 2010; please contact Susan Lisk (01865 810825) for details. All other elements of our service will also be fully functional by that date.
The Historic Environment Record (HER) - formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) - is an index of buildings, monuments, excavations, surveys and all known archaeological 'finds' in Oxfordshire.
