We will help you explore ways of living in which you feel safe and your needs are met
Finding a suitable place to live
If you are finding it difficult to cope at home or you think your present home is not suitable, then we may be able to work with health and housing departments to explore a range of options. These might be to:
help you stay where you are with the help of repairs, adaptations, equipment, nursing support and other care services
help you to move to another home.
These can include:
a more suitable house
adapted housing
housing with support
sheltered housing
registered care home.
If you wish to be assessed for this service or ask for more information, you can complete this online form or telephone Social & Community Services at 0845 050 7666.
Living at home
Practical support should be arranged, wherever possible, to allow you to live safely at home if this is what you want. An occupational therapist can advise you about equipment or adaptations which you may need.
Housing for rent
Housing provision is dealt with by the five district councils in Oxfordshire. See external links on the right. Free advice is also available from each housing department.
Your housing needs are assessed using a points system which acknowledges medical and welfare needs. Serious health problems or disabilities may mean that you are moved more quickly.
The local housing department will also consider how your new accommodation will affect your carer.
Supported living schemes
Various types of supported housing are available according to need and will be discussed as part of a housing needs assessment.
Supported living schemes are aimed at helping people who need some form of help with their day-to-day lives that may otherwise prevent them managing their own tenancy.
Sheltered housing, mainly available to people aged over 60, consists of a protective environment where a warden is also normally resident on site.
Applications for sheltered housing can be made to the local district council housing department. See external links on the right.
Extra Care Housing
Extra Care Housing provides older and disabled people with various care needs with an assured tenancy in a self-contained flat in a purpose-built or adapted scheme.
Supported housing can be provided by councils, housing associations, or voluntary organisations and is often targeted at specific groups of vulnerable people who need a particular type of support such as older people, physically disabled people, people with mental health problems, people with learning disabilities, people recovering from addictions and young people.
Access to supported housing is through referrals from GPs and other health professionals.
Supporting People
The Supporting People service is a programme introduced by the government to ensure vulnerable people have access to positive housing services to enhance their quality of life.
The team works with social workers, probation staff and a range of other agencies including landlords to make sure the best services are available to Oxfordshire residents.
