Definitive map
How we manage this legal record of public rights of way.
Public rights of way are recorded on the legal record, known as the Definitive Map and Statement (DM&S) of Public Rights of Way:
- the Definitive Map shows the location and status of public rights of way.
- the Definitive Statement gives a description of the public rights of way, including any limitations or conditions.
The DM&S is a historically important document that records the 2,600 miles of public rights of way across every parish, town and city accross Oxfordshire. The DM&S has recently been updated for only the fourth time since 1949.
It is looked after by the Rights of Way Office (contact details are on the right), who manage it by:
- producing an accurate DM&S
- keeping this and other associated documents available to the public
- investigating applications to change the DM&S
- processing legal orders that keep the DM&S up to date
The locations and contact details of where you can view the whole DM&S, and for district council areas.
How the Definitive Map & Statement can be modified or diverted, and applications for modifications and diversions that we have received.
