Residential care homes
A guide to finding residential care homes
Sometimes living at home is no longer a practical option. Moving into a residential or nursing home may be the best way forward.
If you are referred for residential or nursing care, a social worker or care manager will assess your needs, provide you with information about homes and help visit to homes you may wish to consider.
If you wish to apply for this service or ask for more information, you can complete this online form or telephone Social & Community Services at 0845 050 7666.
What does a registered care home provide?
A registered care home provides accommodation, meals and help with personal care tasks such as washing, dressing, bathing, getting in and out of bed, getting around and eating.
Unless the care home is registered to provide services 'with nursing' then nursing support is not provided. Care homes 'with nursing' provide care from a qualified nurse employed by the home.
You can now search for care home vacancies in Oxfordshire using our new online service.
Find independent reports and quality ratings on all your local care homes, home care and other registered services, plus address and contact details, to help you make the right choice.
Respite breaks
Most homes provide short respite breaks for carers.
Depending on your financial circumstances, you may be expected to pay for or contribute towards the cost of your care. If so, we will give you a clear idea of what you can expect to pay and how the charges are calculated.

Checking standards in residential care
Looking for a care home? Get free independent reports on the quality of your local homes and care services to help you make an informed choice. All residential homes, whether council-run or private, are regularly inspected by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
The commission's report provides details of many aspects of care including:
- a description of the building
- staffing arrangements
- social care and activities
- health care
- complaints
- contracts of residence
- reports of discussions with staff and residents.
