Have your say on museums

Published 09 November 2012

Oxfordshire residents are being asked for their views on the county’s museums.

There are over 40 museums in Oxfordshire that serve the local community. Oxford ASPIRE, a partnership between the county council and Oxford University run museums, wants to know what the local community thinks of their local museums, whether they visit them or not.

Famous venues such as the Ashmolean, Pitt Rivers and Oxfordshire Museum are included in the survey. The hope is that the curators will be able to use the information collected to develop ways to better meet the needs of visitors in the future.

County Councillor Judith Heathcoat, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Oxfordshire is home to some really good museums and by filling in the survey you will be helping them find ways to improve what they offer and how they work together.

“We need to hear from people that are regular visitors to museums as well as from those who rarely go. It’s as important to know what stops people attending as what regular visitors think.

“Museums are already seeing the benefits of working more closely together through ASPIRE and have staged exhibitions featuring items from various collections.

“The county council’s Oxfordshire Museum has been staging some really interesting guest exhibitions featuring new and iconic art. If this is the sort of thing you want to see more of then tell us – if you have other ideas then this consultation is your opportunity.”

The survey is available online at the county council’s website at: www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/museumsviews
