Leader’s blog: Greece and Germany

Published 18 June 2012

Those people following Euro 2012 may have found it deeply ironic that following the conclusion of two of the tournament’s groups, one of the forthcoming Quarter Finals will be Germany V Greece.

This all came on the same weekend that the Greek electorate took part in their second general election in the space of a few months with the two electoral camps being characterised as “pro-bailout” and “anti-bailout”. This may all feel a million miles away from our day to day issues in Oxfordshire, but it certainly is not.

A firm way forward for Greece and the other financially struggling European states is a pre-cursor to the Euro stabilising. That is a main factor in what is necessary for ourselves in Britain to stave off our own economic struggles – and that brings the whole debate right back down to our own doorsteps here in Oxfordshire.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was watching on anxiously in the hope of a “pro-bailout” win. The result was what she wanted and ultimately was what we in Britain wanted. However it was a very narrow victory.

Let us hope England get through to the Quarter Finals of Euro 2012 and join the Germans and the Greeks at the competition. Let us also hope that the Greek vote is a positive step for all of us.
