Chemical Fire, Beaumont Road Industrial Estate, Banbury

Published 22 June 2012

Oxfordshire County Council Fire & Rescue Service was called at 22:02 on 20 Wednesday, June, to reports of a fire involving chemicals at AAC Cyroma Ltd, on the Beaumont Road Industrial Estate in Banbury.

Around 50 firefighters, on six Fire Appliances from Banbury, Hook Norton, Deddington, along with specialist appliances from Woodstock, Kidlington, Rewley Road,Oxford, Bicester and Eynsham attended the incident.

The initial crew from Banbury station were on scene within seven minutes, and were confronted with a developing fire and significant smoke within the AAC Cyroma Manufacturing premises, near to the Tesco’s store on the Beaumont Road Industrial Estate. The premises was open at the time of the fire, and around 15 personnel evacuated the premises at the outbreak of the fire, having raised the alarm and called the fire service.

Due to the chemicals known to be within the area of the fire, fire crews fought the fire from the roof as well as externally. The building’s sprinkler system activated, and contained the fire, preventing significant fire spread. The materials involved presented potential hazards to crews, and once the fire was extinguished, crews wearing protective chemical clothing entered the premises to establish the extent of the fire and materials involved.

Protection measures and procedures

Group Manager Pete Graham who was in charge of the incident, commented “The preplanning carried out by the site’s management, and the fire protection measures and procedures in place, ensured the safety of their staff as well as assisting our firefighters in tackling this serious incident.

"Having our initial crews on scene within minutes, along with the site’s team leaders who were able to give us comprehensive information and plans was invaluable. The sprinkler system made a significant difference and prevented the fire developing significantly and enabled us to concentrate on dealing with the potential chemical issues.”

The fire was brought under control and extinguished within a couple of hours, however crews  remained on scene through the night along with site management. The fire is believed to be accidental, and is being investigated by the Fire & Rescue Service. South Central Ambulance Service & Thames Valley Police also attended the incident.
