Leader’s blog: Local Government Association

Published 04 July 2012

I spent a part of last week at the Local Government Association’s Annual Conference in Birmingham which was an opportunity to meet senior officers and councillors from councils across the UK and hear about their innovations, challenges and issues.

People in any line of work feel invigorated when they meet colleagues from elsewhere in the country and discuss the issue of the day and compare notes on how they are being managed.

I met Louise Casey, Head of the Troubled Families Team at the Department for Communities and Local Government, who in late June was in Witney to help us open the West Oxfordshire Early Intervention hub on Witan Way.

I also met various national politicians from the various political parties. Networking at such events and pushing Oxfordshire’s case presents an invaluable opportunity.

One item of note for Oxfordshire was that conference gave a vote of thanks to my predecessor Keith Mitchell for his services to local government. Well deserved.
