Hitting the right note at the Sheldonian

Published 24 January 2012

Pupils from 33 schools from all over Oxfordshire, including Oxford, will be travelling to the city’s Sheldonian Theatre on Thursday, January 26, to attend one of two concerts by the county’s top student orchestra.

Youth orchestra

Oxfordshire County Council’s Music Service orchestra, Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra, will be performing a variety of pieces to suit all tastes, including Mars and Jupiter from The Planets, by Holst; Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture and the Circus Suite for brass ensemble by Johnson.

The children - from primary, secondary and special schools - will also be introduced to the various instruments, as well as have the opportunity to sing  ‘The Hippopotamus Song’, accompanied by the orchestra.

Not only will the children listen to the orchestra, but they will be given an exciting guide to the different ‘families’ of instruments.

For many children, this will be the first time they have attended a concert like this. Those who already play instruments with the County Music Service will find it find extremely inspiring.
