Snow and freezing conditions

Published 05 February 2012

Due to the cold weather the Fire and Rescue Service has been receiving lots of calls to incidents over the weekend.

Snow on the Thames Path

Burst pipes

Many of the calls have been about burst water pipes flooding people’s homes, caused by the freezing temperatures.

This is obviously distressing for occupants. There are several things that can be done to try and reduce the danger and damage that this can cause:

  • Turn off the stop cock to prevent further damage
  • Turn off the electricity if you are in any doubt about it being affected
  • Turn off the gas
  • Move valuable and sentimental items to places of safety
  • Ensure that you stay warm and have enough food to eat
  • Contact your insurance to company to seek advice about any potential claims

If you are immediately concerned about your safety or anyone in the house call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.

Station Manager Simon Belcher said: "we are working hard to help people throughout Oxfordshire, a few simple actions by occupiers can reduce the damage that flooding can cause".

If you have a safety question please call the free phone community safety helpline on 08000 325 999 or email community.safety@oxfordshire.gov.uk

Roads

With snow melting and the likelihood of freezing weather overnight, drivers are reminded to slow down and take care in the dangerous conditions.
