Leader’s blog: the winter weather

Published 07 February 2012

The county council had several people working through the weekend to help the county cope with the snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.

Among those were, of course, the hard working drivers of the gritter lorries who covered many thousands of miles and successfully kept open the main roads of Oxfordshire.

There can be no question that the snow of February 2012, while significant in its own right, was not of the magnitude of the snowfall in January and December 2010. There was not as much of it, and the temperatures during and after the fall were sufficient to make sure the white stuff melted in pretty short order.

After so many years in Oxfordshire without snow, people could have been forgiven for believing that every incident of snowfall amounted to what happened in 2010.

It appears that the weather will remain cold for more days ahead so more snow cannot be ruled out. I am sure many of us are relieved that, with February now well underway, we can at least say that Spring is appearing on the distant horizon.
