As winter draws in many people are expected to make use of their open fires, maybe for the first time this year, and if they are not properly cleaned beforehand it could lead to serious consequences.
Stay safe this winter
Cllr Judith Heathcoat, Cabinet Member for Stronger and Safer Communities, said: “We would strongly advise people to get their chimney swept before lighting their fires. Winter definitely arrived this week and we all need that extra warmth, but we also want to ensure that everyone keeps their loved ones and property safe over the winter months.”
Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is advising people to have their chimney swept at least once a year, ideally before they begin using it for the winter and to make sure that embers are properly put out as well as using a British Standard fire guard to prevent sparks escaping.
They are also urging people to take care when storing firewood by ensuring that it’s kept away from a fire place or stove to avoid the risk of accidental ignition through radiated heat.
Other top winter fire safety tips
- Never air or dry clothing near open fires or portable heaters.
- Do not leave candles unattended, make sure they are in a proper holder and remember to extinguish them before you leave a room or go to bed.
- Never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off.
- Unplug electric blankets before you get into bed, unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use and check regularly for wear and tear.
- Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and test it weekly.
- Have a fire escape plan.
Stuart Garner, Oxfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service Risk Reduction Manager said: “Cold weather can increase the risk of fire within the home, with many residents enjoying a log fire or turning up the heat when it is really cold and using portable heaters to stay warm.
“I would strongly recommend that you have your chimney swept at least once a year. Avoid burning resinous woods and only burn suitable fuels. Do not over load your fire place and make sure your fire is out before you leave the house or go to bed.
