Oxfordshire County Council is delighted at the announcement that the county will play host to the Olympic Torch Relay next year.

People from across the county will be able to witness this historic occasion, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOGOC) has confirmed.

The county council will help ensure the safe passage of the relay and work alongside district and city councils to enable local communities to line the streets and watch the relay's passage through Oxfordshire.

Where and when?

The relay will pass through Oxfordshire on Monday 9 July and Tuesday 10 July. Specific details about which roads it will travel on will become public knowledge nearer the time.

Olympic Torch Route through Oxfordshire

Countrywide journey

The Olympic flame represents peace, unity and friendship and will be carried by 8,000 inspirational torchbearers during its 70-day journey across the UK. It will travel to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.

Historic event

Councillor Bill Service, Oxfordshire County Council's Olympics Champion, said: "We are absolutely delighted - as I'm sure the whole county is - that Oxfordshire will form a key section of the Olympic Torch Relay route in 2012. Oxford was of course the scene of one of the greatest landmark achievements in sporting history when Roger Bannister ran the first sub-four minute mile at the Iffley Road Track, and the county has produced many world class sportsmen and women over the years.

"It's a real privilege to be a part of such a historic event and to experience this great Olympic tradition here in Oxfordshire."

Visit from Olympics chief

On Tuesday 8 November Oxfordshire will receive a visit from Andy Hunt, member of the LOCOG board and Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Mr Hunt will be visiting specialist sports college King Alfred's in Wantage - one of the first in the country to join the Get Set Network, the official Olympic education programme aimed at inspiring children through the power of the Olympics.

He will also be taking part in a community workshop at St Joseph's school in Oxford aimed at developing ideas for Oxfordshire's contribution to the Cultural Olympiad.
