The Waste site Proposals and Policies Document will make provision and identify sites for waste management development for the period to 2030 and will set out policies for control of development of those sites.
Issues and Options - consultation on waste sites
In 2007 we published an initial long list of some 200 possible sites for waste management facilities for consultation in the Waste Site Proposals and Policies: Issues and Options paper. We sought information about these sites to help in assessing their suitability for waste development. We also wanted to hear about any other site options there may be.
Preliminary assessments for each site and a location plan were also provided in Annex C and are available on request.
Site assessment work
Following the Issues and Options consultation, we engaged consultants ERM to carry out further technical assessments of the sites that had been identified. This work focussed on sites that might be suitable for strategic (large) facilities to deal with household and/or commercial and industrial wastes.
The interim reports on site selection for Strategic Waste Management Facilities are available below:

Site options
Work undertaken since the Issues and Options consultation has led to the identification of further possible sites for waste development. These additional sites are the result of research undertaken by County officers or from nominations made by a third party (e.g. waste site operators).
Sites that have been discounted since the Issues and Options consultation (where it has become clear that they do not present a viable option) are shown in faded print.
Sites put forward by operators and the type of waste development each envisages is set out in the following list.
All sites and proposals will be the subject of further assessment and are only identified as possible options at this stage.
Site nomination forms
We asked for site nominations to be submitted by January 2009. Anyone considering making a further site nomination should speak first to the Minerals and Waste Policy Team.
Next steps
We intend to prepare a Waste Sites Document, which will follow on from the Minerals and Waste Core Strategy. The comments we have received on possible sites, together with the work by ERM on their assessment of strategic site options, will be taken into account when we prepare a draft of this document for consultation. The timing of this consultation is not yet known, but a timetable will be published here as soon as it is available.
