We carry out a number of transport surveys to support the development of:
Most of the traffic flow data we collect is produced from automatic traffic counts or manual classified counts.
Charges for traffic data
Our standard charges for obtaining standard traffic count data are as follows:
- £160 for first item
- £100 for additional items on same order
- £25 for additional weeks at automatic traffic count sites.
Large traffic surveys, such as counts at interchanges and interview data, will be priced on application.
- Table A - Annual Average Daily Traffic Flows (pdf format, 572Kb)
This gives Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) flow on motorway, trunk roads, A class, B class and some unclassified roads. This is based on the automatic traffic counts throughout the county. The file contains flows for 2001 and for each year from 2006 to 2011.
- AADT Band width diagram (pdf format, 290Kb)
This gives a good visual impression of traffic flows in Oxfordshire. The width of each road (link) on the classified network (M, A and B roads) is defined by the size of the AADT
- Table B Manual Classified Counts (pdf format, 943Kb)
This gives a list of manual classified counts (7am to 7pm) with count totals of pedal cycles, heavy goods vehicles, and all vehicles.
- List of traffic counts 2000 onwards (Excel format 1.9MB)
A comprehensive list of all surveys carried out from the year 2000. The list gives information including the survey location, type, date and OS grid reference.
- Inductive loop installations (.pdf format, 307Kb)
This file shows the exact locations of all inductive loop installations. Please use this table to determine whether any of our sites will be affected by any roadworks or schemes you may be working on.
Congestion monitoring
This includes a range of data collection and measuring techniques to give a detailed picture of traffic flows and delay on Oxfordshire's roads. This information is used to help identify the worst congestion hotspots and inform planning to make improvements to the network and transport infrastructure across Oxfordshire.
Cycle monitoring
We use a series of automatic and manual cycle counts across the county to monitor the proportion of trips made by bicycle.
Traffic growth
Average traffic flow in Oxfordshire increased by 0.4% on all roads during 2011 when compared to 2010. Oxfordshire has experienced a smaller increase in traffic flow when compared to the national picture (a 0.9% increase in traffic flow). This national increase follows three consecutive years of decline. This is the first period since records began in 1949 that traffic has declined in consecutive years.
A-roads in the county experienced the greatest reduction in traffic flows (-1.0%), while in contrast traffic flows on the M40 in Oxfordshire increased by 2.5%.
The rate of traffic flow on Oxfordshire's roads over the last 10 years (2001 to 2011) decreased by 1.1%. Traffic on Oxfordshire's non-strategic roads, i.e. those roads for which we are responsible, decreased by 1.5% over ten years.
Over the past five years (2006 to 2011) there has been a reduction in average traffic flow of more than 3% for all roads in the county ( -3.4%). For the non-strategic roads there has been a decrease of 3.2%.
