Overseas trained teachers (OTTs)

For non-EEA (European Economic Area) teachers wanting to become qualified teachers in England.

We welcome overseas trained teachers (OTTs) in Oxfordshire.

Anyone wishing to work as a qualified teacher in England must have qualified teacher status (QTS) and will be required to undertake a skills test before being accepted on to the programme. However, if you qualified overseas, you can work as a ‘temporary teacher’ for a maximum of four years but you must have gained QTS before the end of the fourth year if you wish to continue teaching in this country.

Suitably-qualified OTTs from outside the EEA who are employed in our mainstream schools can register for the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) which can lead to qualified teacher status. In some cases, the OTT may not have to serve an induction year after qualification. Another possibility is to apply for the Assessment Only Route (AO). For more information and an application form, go to www.oxonbucks.co.uk or call the Oxon-Bucks Partnership on 01865 797399.

Teachers trained in the UK/EEA/USA/Canada/Australia/New Zealand

If you qualified as a teacher in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand or one of the other countries in the European Economic Area (EEA), you may be eligible for QTS without any further assessment.

Contact the Teaching Agency on 0800 389 2500 or www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching.
