Livestock shows

Guidance for livestock owners for showing and trade stands.

Documents and records

  • All cattle must be identified with approved eartags and, if born on or after 1 January, 1998 be double tagged.
  • All cattle born after 1 July 1996 are required to have a passport.
  • The passport must accompany the animal to the show.

Movement to the show

The movement to the show must be recorded as follows:

Older cattle with green-style passports and certificates of registration

  • Movement to the show must be recorded by filling in the box called 'seller's details' on the passport.
  • Movement onto and off the show to be shown on the passport by show organisers as a 'through movement' (as for markets).
  • Movement back to holding or onto new holding (if sold) to be recorded by filling in the 'buyer's details' box.

Cattle with chequebook

  • Movement to the show must be recorded by attaching the bar code, and dating /signing the off holding section.
  • Movement onto and off the show to be filled in by the show organisers as a through movement (as for markets).
  • Movement back to holding or onto new holding (if sold) to be recorded by fixing the holding bar code and dating/signing the on holding section.

The movement details are to be completed within 36 hours of the movement taking place, and movement cards (in passports or attached to certificates of registration), are to be completed and sent to the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) within three days of the movement taking place. Please ensure that there is adequate space within the passport and you have sufficient movement cards to record the movements to and from the show.

Sheep, goats and pigs must be individually identified with approved ear tags or a tattoo.

For sheep, goats and pigs a movement document (AML1 or 2) must accompany the stock to the show. An AML1 or 2 must be obtained from the show organisers and completed before you leave. The white copy must be sent to your local authority within three days of arrival at your destination.

Movement restrictions

Livestock from an approved isolation unit

Livestock that comes from an approved isolation unit and returns to the same unit does not trigger the six-day (cattle, sheep and goats) or 20-day (pigs) standstill.

Show-to-show movements are permitted provided the livestock was originally moved from an approved isolation unit and had been held there for a period of six days (for cattle, sheep and goats) or 20 days (for pigs).

General licence conditions apply to all movements.

Otherwise

Movement of cattle sheep or goats from the show will trigger the six-day standstill (20 days for pigs) on the holding to which they return.
