Learning an instrument

We provide a range of instrumental lessons for young people in schools around Oxfordshire.

Boy playing guitar

Most of this tuition is offered by our visiting teachers in schools around the county during the school day. However, there are also out of school opportunities for all ages.

We currently offer tuition in:

  • strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass
  • woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone
  • brass: trumpet, cornet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, horn (French and tenor), tuba
  • percussion: drum kit, tuned percussion, harp
  • guitar: classical, electric and bass
  • keyboard.

Lessons

We offer 30 lessons in an academic year.

Lessons are generally 30 minutes long, although groups of seven or more have 40 minutes and there are some individual 20 minute lessons.

Students will usually will have lessons during the school day. For most instruments, we need at least four students in the group for lessons to start.

Students are given a record book so they know what to practise each week and to help communication with parents / carers. Students will be given the opportunity to take graded exams organised by OCMS and Trinity College.
