Improvements to The Slade and Old Road in Oxford

Details of pedestrian and cycle improvements on The Slade and Old Road, Headington.

Work to improve Old Road and The Slade is now almost complete. Some further resurfacing and line painting will be completed in the summer, because it needs to be done in warmer weather.

Until the final markings are completed the scheme will appear disjointed. To see how the different parts of the scheme fit together, please use the drawings at the bottom of this page.

The scheme has been part-funded by Sustrans, a sustainable travel charity, as part of their 2011-2012 Links to Schools and Communities programme.

What we are doing

The main features of the scheme are:

  • improvements at the junction of Old Road / Windmill Road / The Slade and Old Road / Gipsy Lane, including conversion of three of the pedestrian crossings to toucan crossings which can also be used by cyclists
  • conversion of two pelican crossings on the Slade / Horspath Driftway to toucan crossings
  • new cycle lanes on the carriageway on Old Road and The Slade
  • new sections of off-carriageway cycle track in Old Road and The Slade
  • a new zebra crossing near Stapleton Road
  • improvements to the junctions of the side roads with the main roads to make it easier for pedestrians to cross them

The proposals are shown in the plans at the bottom of this page.
