Fire service recruitment information for women and ethnic minorities

Positive action recruitment information for women and people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Female firefighter

Positive action open days or 'have a go' days will be scheduled annually and listed on this page as part of the Wholetime and RDS recruitment for firefighters starting the recruitment process over the next two years.

Open days or Have a Go days are designed to allow access to women and also to people from minority ethnic groups who are not currently represented on a large scale in the Fire and Rescue Service. These events allow candidates the opportunity to undertake or sample the sort of test they might encounter during the recruitment. It provides encouragement and access to service personnel who were in the same position as they are.

The events are designed to precede the recruitment itself and allow sufficient lead in time so that candidates can prepare themselves both physically and mentally by dedicated and guided practice and study.

Positive action for underrepresented groups

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s corporate value of embracing diversity recognises the direct connection between the composition of our workforce and our ability to deliver the kind of services people want in a diverse environment. We have committed ourselves to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce which generally reflects the local population.

To enable this to happen we have agreed to set forward looking employment targets found in our strategic document Walk the Talk.

What is positive action?

Positive action can be described as measures that employers may lawfully take under the Race Relations Act to meet special needs or to train or encourage people from a racial group that is under-represented in particular work.

The same holds true for Women who are underrepresented in the workforce as part of removing barriers and driving down Sex Discrimination.

The most important point to understand about positive action is that it is not positive discrimination. It deals with where and how jobs are advertised and also includes access to training.

If you would like more information regarding the wholetime recruitment process because you are female or from an ethnic minority group please contact us.
