Completed transport projects

Some of the major transport projects that we have recently carried out.

Heyford Hill roundabout

Details of plan for Heyford Hill roundaboutTo improve safety and ease of use by pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, Sainsbury's developed a roundabout improvement scheme in consultation with Oxfordshire County Council.

The scheme fitted with our longer term plans to upgrade not only the Heyford Hill roundabout, but also the other roundabouts on the southern part of Oxford’s ring road.

The works were completed in the autumn of 2011 and included:

  • the addition of traffic signals to the roundabout
  • the creation of a new westbound lane through the centre of the roundabout
  • an extra lane around the roundabout for eastbound traffic
  • improved slip roads on all arms of the roundabout
  • a new signal controlled toucan crossing on the eastern arm of the roundabout.

London Road in Headington

We carried out work in 2010 to improve the Headington shopping area between Osler Road and Wharton Road, helping to ensure its future as a vibrant local centre. The main features of the scheme included:

  • improved pavements, with 70% recycled block paving, and fewer level changes
  • less clutter and new, high quality street furniture
  • two new pedestrian crossings
  • an inbound bus gate to reduce delays to passengers gently raised junctions and improved side road crossings
  • more trees and cycle parking
  • improved bus shelters.

The Headington subway was filled in as part of these works, so we photographed the murals, which was decorated in 2002 by community artists:

Oxford High Street

In 2009-10, we carried out roadworks on Oxford High Street to reconstruct the worn-out road. Work also included:

  • decluttering the street by removing any unnecessary road markings, signs and parking meters (parking and loading restrictions are now indicated using single yellow lines and sign plates)
  • improving the paving on much of the street
  • installing a quieter road surface
  • improving bus stops
  • improving pedestrian crossings
  • making the entrance to the bus gate clearer to motorists.

20 mph speed limits in Oxford

To increase safety levels and help reduce accidents, and to improve the environment and quality of life for pedestrians, cyclists and residents, 20mph limits were introduced on many of Oxford's roads in 2009:
