Children and War

Do you have a story to tell or a memento to show?

The exhibition touches on many aspects of war and warfare such as boy soldiers, war toys and games, commemoration, evacuation as well as innocent victims such as those caught up in the Holocaust. It also considers the victims of war abroad, some of whom have made it to Britain as asylum seekers and refugees.

All this is examined through the lens of the county of Oxfordshire to tell a rich and fascinating story. The Children and War exhibition opened on 16 October. See news.

The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Trust's Children and War exhibition has been nominated for a Museums and Heritage Award in the Temporary or Touring Exhibition category, alongside such illustrious company as the National Army Museum and the Museum of London. The exhibition was created by curator Julie Summers working with designer Glenn Howard. The exhibition links to the museum's outreach work with schools and other groups. The award results will be announced in May 2012.

Appeal for souvenirs and memories

Your experience and souvenirs are our exhibits of the future!

Until the end of 2012 we are collecting stories and objects with a local connection relating to a new exhibition at the Oxfordshire Museum on the theme of Children and War.

For example, Were you or anyone in your family evacuated to Oxfordshire? Do you have a wartime memento? Was your family separated during the war? How did the war affect your family? What was your 'war work' as a child?

Pupils with the artwork

The exhibition inspired pupils from Wood Green School, Witney, to create an artwork - now on display in the museum.

The work of art was the culmination of four half-day sessions in which the youngsters explored the exhibition, its themes, objects as well as learning various artistic techniques.

At the end of the project, run by Soldiers of Oxfordshire and The Oxfordshire Museum, the children were presented with a certificate.
