Bus shelters
Your local town or parish council is responsible for bus shelters in your area. If you request a new shelter from them, they may be able to apply to us for a bus shelter grant.
Requesting a new bus stop
If you want to request a new bus stop, first contact your local town or parish council, as we will seek their opinion on all bus stop requests. They will also have to pay a nominal charge (otherwise, the person requesting the stop will be responsible for all cost involved).
If the request is supported by the local council we will convene a formal site meeting to determine the most appropriate location for the new bus stop. The local county councillor, Oxfordshire Highways, the town or parish council, Thames Valley Police and relevant bus operators will be invited to attend.
Under normal circumstances, affected householders will be invited to comment on proposals for new bus stops. Any objections to the siting of new or relocated stops will be considered by the county council within 28 days and a response given in writing.
Issues to consider before a bus stop can be created
- Is the proposed site safe for all users?
- Does it avoid unnecessary obstruction?
- Is the site convenient for bus passengers?
- Are there any effects on the environment?
- Are bus companies willing to observe the proposed stop?
- Is there a paved area for passengers to stand on?
- Does the request meet the requirements of Development and Local Plans?
- Is the request approved by the Highways Agency?
- Who will pay for the work?
In some cases hardstanding waiting areas, seats and/or shelters can be provided. The majority of bus shelters in Oxfordshire are the responsibility of local town or parish councils. To request a new or enhanced bus shelter please contact your town or parish council.
Moving an existing bus stop
If you ask us to move a bus stop from outside your property, we will only consider this if all the following are met:
- The stop can be moved to another site in the immediate vicinity
- Any owner of property adjacent to the proposed site has agreed in writing for the stop to be moved there
- The move does not cause extra problems in terms of road safety or convenience of bus passengers
- The town or parish councils and relevant bus companies are in favour
Either the person requesting the move, or the town or parish councils, pays for the move, which could be up to £200 (much more if a shelter is involved).
Removed or damaged stops
Removed or damaged stops can be replaced without charge.
