There are a range of local services supporting people with drug or alcohol-related problems.

Oxfordshire Community Drug and Alcohol Service

SMART's new Oxfordshire service provides a range of services for people with drug and alcohol issues. Services include:

  • an open access drop-in service for anyone who is worried about their drinking or drug use - no appointment necessary
  • group sessions
  • alcohol specific support
  • one-to-one support sessions
  • harm reduction advice
  • family and carer support.

Referral

You can be referred in any of the following ways:

  • By visiting a drop-in (Monday 2pm - 4pm or Friday 10am - 4pm at SMART, 10B Littlegate Street, Oxford OX1 1QT)
  • Via your GP
  • By calling SMART on 01865 403 151
  • By emailing SMART at enquiries@smartcjs.org.uk

When you contact SMART, we will make an appointment for you to meet a professional drug or alcohol worker who will work with you to undertake an assessment of your needs and provide you with information and next steps.

Specialist Community Addictions Service

The Specialist Community Addictions Service (SCAS) is a community based drug and alcohol team providing support in partnership with many other services which help people with addictive behaviours.

The team is made up of social workers, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, specialist GPs and support workers. Services include:

  • assessment
  • care management
  • residential rehabilitation
  • detoxification
  • family support
  • advice, counselling and therapy with relapse prevention.

How can I be referred to the service?

People can refer themselves or be referred through their doctors or drugs worker. For more information contact the city team at 01865 455623 or the county team at 01865 455614.

Medical care

All GPs offer general medical services and:

  • advice on safer injecting
  • needle exchange facilities
  • testing for HIV and hepatitis
  • referral to other services.

Shared care

The Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) - part of a nationalstrategy on drug abuse -together with the five Oxfordshire Primary Care Trusts run a shared care scheme for the treatment of drug users.

GPs, social workers and pharmacists work together to prescribe and supervise substitute medication.

There are three shared care schemes in Oxfordshire (north, city and south), each of which is supported by a specialist GP who provides clinic-based care.

Specialist medical services

Specialist medical services for drug users are provided for people who cannot use shared care. They include:

  • people who take more than one kind of drug
  • pregnant drug-users
  • under 18s
  • drug users with mental health problems.
